Boutonnieres

Boutonniere also boutonnière ( ) n. A flower or small bunch of flowers worn in a buttonhole. [French boutonnière , from Old French.

Rosebuds are always available for men to wear on a wedding day, but many of Lillie's brides think outside the box when choosing a boutonniere for their grooms.

In keeping with the theme of the wedding, this bout gets its vintage look from soft lamb's ear, two types of silk ribbon and a tiny silver charm bearing an old family photograph.

brides and grooms

Alabama has so many beautiful places to marry and Lillie's gets to experience them all! I so enjoyed my weekend at beautiful Lake Martin with the Owen's family.

Bride Lauren married in the chapel at Children's Harbor carrying a hand tied bouquet of Anna roses, Eskimo roses, white calla and freesia.

Frank Carnaggio of Birmingham was Lauren's wedding photographer and kind to share these images.

Queen Anne's Lace

A wedding ceremony under large oak trees on the edge of a pasture, the bride carried the most feminine of all the field flowers . . . Queen Anne's Lace.

Thank you Frank Carnaggio for the images.

bouquets for brides

A bride's bouquet is unique and personal.
Many bride's carry sweet mementos down the aisle to meet their grooms.

. . . treasured family heirlooms are nestled between blossoms, pinned onto bouquet handles or tied on with ribbons.

When bride Jessica married in May she pinned a locket onto her bouquet of white peonies.

Thank you Jerrod Brown Photography for these images.

Flower girls

What is it about watching a flower girl row skip and sashay down an aisle that makes us coo and aww? Because they're irresistibly cute.

bouquet day

Engaged Wedding Library invited Birmingham Brides last week to "Bouquet Day." Engaged girls were able to see all shapes, sizes and flavors of flowers gathered together in bouquets and nosegays.
~ the maids carried wildflowers ~

This French bouquet my favorite. The little pink spray roses were baby pink majolica spray roses, the snapdragons were also a soft pink, but the lavender veronica upstaged them both. A lambs ear collar of soft silvery green completed the look.

bridesmaid's in the fall

Bride Amy married on a beautiful Fall afternoon at South Highland Presbyterian.
The windows in the sanctuary are bright and colorful. Amy wanted a fall look incorporating seeds and berries but requested an ivory color palette so as not to distract from the church's windows.
When we gathered for her bouquets we kept this in mind using thistle, seeded eucalyptus, wheat, chamomile and champagne roses.

~ baby blue ~

Bride Allison loved baby blue. After a wedding ceremony inside Samford University's Reid Chapel, Allison sashed her wedding dress with baby blue satin ribbon and danced the night away at the Avon Theater in Lakeview. She asked to have sap buckets of flower to greet guests as they entered the reception. We enjoyed working with the Happy Catering Company (see their van peeking through the slats of the fence?) The wedding cake by Julie Hendricks of Sweet Magnolia was beautiful and delicious. And thanks to the staff of GoPro Event Soulutions the entire event ran smoothly. Best Wishes to the bride and groom!

welcome

From out of town guests to bridesmaids, people pour through the front doors of the Bride's parents.
The mother of this May bride asked for fresh flowers on her door welcoming guests to the wedding weekend.
This wreath is made of hydrangea, casa blancas, white snap dragons and Virginia alstromaria. The hosta leaves fern and illeagnus are from the bride's mother's garden.

Ask an expert . . .

Thank you to Birmingham Party Planning for including Lillie's on their web site. They were even kind enough to call us "Experts!"

QUESTION:
Should you ask for references before deciding on a floral designer?

ANSWER:
Carol says that it is very acceptable to ask for references. She also suggests that you talk to other wedding or event vendors such as your caterer, photographer or venue about the floral designer you are considering. "Have you worked with ...?" There is a lot of coordination between vendors and most of them know each other. A "thumbs up" from someone else in a related industry will surely help you feel confident in your choice.

Morning Sunshine on the Church Doors

I often tell brides - consider where the sun will be shining on your wedding day. Your photographer will be able to help place you and your groom in just the right light. I would also encourage you to visit the wedding venue four weeks out, preferably at the exact time of the ceremony. This will give you a good idea of what the light will look like on the day of the wedding and how the sunshine will be streaming in the church windows.

creating

~ My snips, ribbon, pictures and pretty are spread all over the table this rainy morning ~

I am happy to be working on inspiration boards for new 2010 Brides. Often girls come to me with bits and pieces of a dream . . . a fabric swatch, a word, a page torn from a magazine. It is fun for me to pull all of this together and begin creating the vision for a Wedding.

This is the happiest job in the world!

I have lost count of the number of times a bride says to me, "I am not sure how to describe exactly what I want." The wedding inspiration boards are wonderful to give just that, "Inspiration!"

My job is just to figure out what is in the head of the Bride. After all this is the Bride's day. Above all I want my bride to have her heart's desire.

It is my goal for the guests at the wedding to say . . . "This looks just like the Bride!"

Vacation Time

Summer Haven Beach on Anastasia Island ~ Yesterday morning we watched a whale right off the beach for an hour. The dolphins and pelicans were in a frenzy all around the whale in the ocean. Mr. Whale was even slapping his tail on the sea. Yesterday afternoon after a short shower a complete rainbow crossed the Atlantic Ocean. Two "Firsts" for me ~ perfect holiday.
